The 106M1081-01 Universal AC Power Input Module (hereafter referred to as "Universal AC PIM") is an advanced front-end interface module designed specifically for the 3500/15 series power system. It is used in conjunction with the 3500/15 Universal AC Power Supply Module (part number 106M1079-01), together forming a complete "Universal AC Power Solution" adaptable to AC power grids worldwide.

Within the architecture of the 3500 rack, the power supply module and its corresponding Power Input Module (PIM) are strategically deployed in designated half-height slots on the left side of the rack. The power supply module is responsible for converting input power and distributing it to all monitoring, protection, and interface modules within the rack. The 106M1081-01 PIM, however, plays the critical role of a "gateway": it connects directly to the external AC power lines at the industrial site, receives the raw AC power, performs preliminary filtering, protection, and distribution, and then safely delivers it to the Universal AC Power Supply module behind it for final DC conversion.

Its designation as "Universal" stems from its exceptional wide-range voltage input capability, enabling seamless compatibility with a broad voltage range from 85V AC to 264V AC (RMS), covering the standard industrial voltages of the vast majority of countries and regions worldwide (e.g., 110V, 120V, 220V, 230V, 240V). This design simplifies spare parts inventory management, system deployment, and equipment relocation for globalized enterprises, eliminating the need to stock different PIM models for different voltage regions.

II. Application Scenarios and System Advantages

  1. Building Redundant Power Architecture: This is one of the core values of the 106M1081-01 and its power supply module. In a single 3500 rack, users can install two identical sets of the Universal AC Power Solution (i.e., two 106M1079-01 power modules and two 106M1081-01 PIMs). According to the manual, the power supply/PIM combination in the lower slot defaults to the primary supply, and the one in the upper slot acts as the backup supply. Should the primary supply fail, be removed for maintenance, or lose its front-end input power, the backup supply will automatically and seamlessly take over, ensuring continuous power to the entire rack for zero-interruption operation. This is crucial for protection systems of critical machinery (e.g., large compressors, turbines, generator sets), where any monitoring interruption could lead to catastrophic failure.

  2. Supporting Hot-Swap Maintenance: In a redundant configuration, any power supply module or PIM (including the 106M1081-01) can be hot-swapped (removed or inserted online) while the system remains powered and its monitoring functions uninterrupted. This simplifies preventive maintenance and fault replacement procedures, significantly enhancing system maintainability and availability.

  3. Global Deployment and Simplified Supply Chain: Due to its voltage and frequency adaptability, systems utilizing the 106M1081-01 can be deployed anywhere in the world without needing to change power input components due to differing local grid standards. For multinational corporations, this means a globally unified part number, reducing the complexity and cost of spare parts inventory.

  4. Future-Oriented Design: This module belongs to Bently Nevada's newer generation "Universal" series and is explicitly stated as not compatible with the traditional "High Voltage AC" or "Low Voltage AC" PIMs and power supply modules. This marks a technological iteration and standardization of the product line. Choosing the 106M1081-01 means the user is adopting the latest, most compatible technology platform with a longer future support cycle.

III. Compatibility and Upgrade Considerations

Please note: "The Universal AC Power Supply and PIM (Power Input Module) are not compatible with the Legacy 3500 AC Power Supply, High Voltage AC PIM and Low Voltage AC PIM."

  • Legacy vs. New: Users must clearly identify whether their existing system uses "Legacy" models or "Universal" models. The two differ in electrical design, connectors, and internal circuitry; they cannot be mixed, crossed, or installed interchangeably, as this may cause equipment damage or failure to operate.

  • Upgrade Path: If a user wishes to upgrade an existing system using Legacy AC power supplies to the Universal platform, they must simultaneously replace both the power supply module and the PIM with a new Universal set (106M1079-01 + 106M1081-01). Such an upgrade brings a wider input range, potentially higher efficiency, and better future support.

As a half-height module, its width is only half that of a standard full-height module (25.4mm), a compact design that optimizes rack space utilization. Its moderate depth facilitates arrangement and cabling within the rack.

    • Weight: 0.34 kg (0.75 lb). The lightweight design facilitates installation and handling.

    • Installation Location: This module must be installed in the dedicated half-height slot located directly behind its Universal AC Power Supply Module, on the left side of the rack. This "back-to-back" installation method shortens internal power wiring, improving reliability and reducing electromagnetic interference. A single 3500 rack can accommodate up to two such power supply-PIM combinations for redundancy.

  3. Environmental Suitability:

    • Operating Temperature Range: -30°C to +65°C (-22°F to +150°F). This wide-temperature design allows the 3500 system to be deployed in extreme conditions ranging from frigid outdoor environments to hot industrial plant interiors, ensuring long-term stable operation in harsh industrial settings.

    • Storage Temperature Range: -40°C to +85°C (-40°F to +185°F). Provides more lenient conditions for transportation and warehousing.

    • Humidity: Up to 95%, non-condensing. Capable of reliable operation in high-humidity environments, many industrial sites (e.g., offshore platforms, pulp & paper, chemical plants) with moist air.
