The DI830 is a high-performance, high-reliability digital input module within the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® series, designed for industrial automation control systems. This module is part of the S800 I/O system, featuring 16-channel 24 V DC input capability with current sinking operation, suitable for the acquisition and monitoring of various field digital signals. The DI830 not only provides basic digital input functions but also integrates Sequence of Event (SOE) recording capability, delivering precise event timestamps to the system. It is widely used in industries with strict requirements for event sequence and timing accuracy, such as power generation, petrochemicals, rail transportation, and smart manufacturing.


The module utilizes opto-isolation technology, offering excellent noise immunity and electrical safety. It supports various Module Termination Units (MTUs), adapting to different field wiring requirements. Its built-in self-diagnostics, adjustable digital filters, and shutter filter mechanism further enhance system stability and reliability.

  • Shutter Filter prevents event queue overflow with user-configurable trigger conditions and recovery time.

  • The module performs cyclic self-diagnostics, including:

    • Process power supply supervision

    • Event queue full detection

    • Time synchronization loss detection

  • Front-panel LEDs indicate module status and individual channel input states for easy field maintenance.

III. Functional Details

1. Sequence of Event (SOE) Recording

The SOE function of the DI830 provides precise timestamps for each input channel state change (from "0" to "1" or "1" to "0"), with a resolution of 0.4 milliseconds and automatic compensation for filter delay. This feature is particularly valuable for power system fault analysis, production line event tracing, safety system action logging, and other scenarios requiring rapid determination of event sequence, thereby improving system maintainability.

2. Self-Diagnostics and Monitoring

The module includes multiple built-in diagnostic functions:

  • Process Power Supply Supervision: Monitors the external 24 V supply, triggering a module warning upon anomaly.

  • Event Queue Status: Indicates "Event Queue Full" when the intermediate storage reaches its 32-event capacity.

  • Time Synchronization Check: Ensures accurate SOE time reference.
    All diagnostic results are displayed via the front-panel LEDs (F/R/W) and system software.

3. Filtering and Debouncing

Users can set the digital filter time (0–100 ms) according to signal characteristics to filter out noise pulses. Additionally, the Shutter Filter prevents event queue overflow caused by frequent signal toggling. It is configurable with:

  • Shutter Period: 0–255 seconds

  • Shutter Trigger: 0–255 changes

  • Recovery Time: 0–65535 seconds

4. Electrical Safety and Isolation

The module employs opto-isolation technology, electrically isolating each group of 8 channels from the system, effectively preventing field interference from entering the control system. With a rated insulation voltage of 50 V and a dielectric test voltage of 500 V a.c., it meets industrial safety requirements.

5. Multi-MTU Compatibility

The DI830 supports various MTUs within the ABB S800 series. Users can select the appropriate termination unit based on wiring methods, sensor types (2-wire/3-wire), and the need for fuse protection. Examples include:

  • TU830/TU833: Suitable for 3-wire sensors, no external terminals required.

  • TU818: Suitable for 2-wire sensors, offering simplified wiring.

  • TU838: Provides 3 A fuse protection per two channels for high-reliability applications.

  • TU850: Features a disconnectable PTC-protected sensor/transmitter power outlet per channel for easy maintenance.

  3. SOE Enablement: Enable the SOE function on channels requiring event recording and ensure proper system time synchronization.

  4. Power and Grounding: Ensure stable 24 V process power supply and proper grounding according to standards to reduce common-mode interference.

  5. Environmental Considerations: Pay attention to heat dissipation in high-temperature or compact installations to ensure the module operates within its specified temperature range.
