The ABB DO801 is a high-performance digital output module designed for industrial automation control systems, belonging to the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® hardware family and compatible with the S800 I/O system. This module provides 16 channels of 24V DC current sourcing outputs, with a maximum continuous output current of 0.5A per channel. It offers outstanding reliability, safety, and flexibility, widely used in process control, manufacturing, energy management, and building automation.


The DO801 module integrates advanced protection features, including short-circuit, overvoltage, and overtemperature protection. All output channels are in one isolated group, effectively preventing field interference and fault propagation. Its modular design, visual status indicators, and detachable connectors facilitate easier installation, maintenance, and diagnostics, making it an ideal choice for high-precision, high-stability digital output control in modern industrial control systems.

3. Function and Design Details

1. Output Channel Structure

Each output channel includes:

  • High-side driver: Protected against short circuits and overtemperature;

  • EMC protection components: Enhanced immunity to electromagnetic interference;

  • Inductive load suppression circuit: Protects output from back-EMF surges;

  • Output state LED: Real-time indication of channel ON/OFF status;

  • Optical isolation barrier: Provides electrical isolation, enhancing system safety.

2. Intelligent Protection Mechanism

When an output is overloaded, the current is automatically limited, and power dissipation increases. If the temperature exceeds 150°C, the channel shuts down automatically; it recovers automatically when the temperature drops to about 140°C. During this process, the channel indicator remains lit, but the output status cannot be read, alerting maintenance personnel.

3. OSP (Output Set as Predetermined) Function

In case of communication failure or system abnormality, the module can set outputs to predefined safe states within 256, 512, or 1024 ms, preventing unintended equipment operation, suitable for safety-critical applications.

4. Compatibility and Scalability

As part of the S800 I/O family, the DO801 integrates seamlessly with ABB System 800xA® and Symphony Plus platforms, supporting the construction of large-scale distributed control systems.

5. Installation and Usage Recommendations

  1. Installation Environment:

    • Avoid direct sunlight, corrosive gases, and high-dust environments;

    • Ensure adequate ventilation and sufficient space around the module for heat dissipation.

  2. Wiring Precautions:

    • Use the recommended torque to tighten terminals, avoiding poor contact or damage;

    • Connect wires correctly according to channel numbers, referring to the process connection diagram (see Figure 149).

  3. Diagnostics and Maintenance:

    • Regularly check front panel LED status and promptly address any alarms;

    • If channels frequently trigger overtemperature protection, check if the load current exceeds specifications.
