The TU834 is an Extended Module Termination Unit (MTU) within the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® hardware series, specifically designed for S800 I/O module systems. This product is a passive unit used to connect field wiring to corresponding I/O modules, while also carrying part of the ModuleBus signal transmission function. The TU834 supports up to 8 I/O channels and 2+2 process power connections, making it suitable for signal and power distribution in various demanding environments such as industrial automation, process control, and power monitoring.


The TU834 employs a DIN rail mounting method and features mechanical keying, module locking, and grounding protection designs to ensure installation safety and reliability. Its compact structure and flexible configuration make it an ideal wiring and signal distribution solution for medium- to high-density I/O systems.



2. Key Features and Benefits

1. High-Density Channel Design

  • Supports up to 8 independent I/O channels, each equipped with two I/O terminals and one ZP connection point.

  • Provides 4 process power terminals (L+/L-) and 20 process power (0 V) connection points to meet the power supply requirements of complex systems.

2. Mechanical Keying Prevents Wrong Insertion

  • Equipped with two sets of mechanical keys, each with 6 selectable positions, offering a total of 36 mechanical configuration combinations.

  • Prevents insertion of incorrect I/O module types through mechanical means, improving system installation accuracy and safety.

3. Module Locking and Initialization Control

  • Built-in mechanical locking device securely locks the I/O module onto the MTU.

  • Locking simultaneously sends a BLOCK signal to the module, keeping it in the initialization state until fully locked, ensuring safe system startup.

4. Convenient Installation and Grounding Design

  • Supports vertical or horizontal DIN rail mounting, adapting to different cabinet layouts.

  • Equipped with a rail latch for quick installation or removal using a screwdriver.

  • Provides reliable grounding connection, complying with Class I equipment protection requirements per IEC 61140.

5. Integrated Signal and Power Distribution

  • Integrates ModuleBus signal distribution function, capable of passing bus signals and address information to the next MTU.

  • Automatically generates correct addresses for subsequent I/O modules by shifting outgoing position signals.

6. Complete Set of Accessories

  • Includes 8 individual shunt sticks (TY801) in the package for flexible connection of input signals.

  3. Grounding and Protection

    • Always achieve proper grounding via the latch to meet Class I equipment protection requirements.

    • Note the IP20 protection limitation in dusty or humid environments.

  4. Maintenance and Replacement

    • Perform module insertion/removal or configuration changes only when power is off.

    • Use a screwdriver to operate the latch and mechanical keys to avoid forced disassembly.
