The CI801 Fieldbus Communications Interface (FCI) is a high-performance, high-reliability intelligent communication interface module designed by ABB for industrial automation control systems. Acting as a critical bridge between the controller and field I/O modules, this module communicates with the upper-level control system via the PROFIBUS-DPV1 fieldbus and exchanges data with S800 series I/O modules via the ModuleBus. It is suitable for various demanding industrial environments such as process industries, manufacturing, and energy management.


The CI801 integrates multiple functions including communication processing, power management, signal isolation, and module configuration into a single unit. It supports advanced features like hot swapping, online configuration, and HART protocol pass-through, significantly enhancing system flexibility, maintainability, and scalability. III. Detailed Product Functionality

1. Communication Interface and Protocol Support

As a PROFIBUS-DPV1 slave device, the CI801 seamlessly integrates into existing PROFIBUS networks, enabling high-speed data exchange with masters (such as PLCs or DCS controllers). It supports DPV1 extended functions, including parameterization, configuration, diagnostics, and alarm handling, making it suitable for complex automation tasks.

2. ModuleBus Management and Expansion

Via the electrical ModuleBus, the CI801 can connect up to 12 S800 series I/O modules (e.g., digital I/O, analog I/O, temperature modules) and is responsible for module power supply, communication scheduling, and status monitoring. The module supports online hot swapping, greatly enhancing system availability and maintenance convenience.

3. Power Management and Isolation

The CI801 incorporates a high-efficiency isolated power supply that converts the external 24V DC input into internal operating power and the +5V/+24V power required by the ModuleBus. All outputs feature overcurrent and short-circuit protection, ensuring stable system operation and preventing fault propagation.

4. Configuration and Diagnostics

  • Rotary Switch Setting: The PROFIBUS station address (0-99) is easily set via two decimal rotary switches.

  • Service Port: The PROFIBUS interface is multiplexed as a service port, supporting local debugging, firmware updates, and diagnostics.

  • LED Status Indication: Multi-color LEDs provide intuitive indication for power, communication, and module status.

5. Mechanical and Installation Design

  • DIN Rail Mounting: Designed for standard 35 mm DIN rail mounting, with grounding achieved through the rail.
