The CI853 is a high-performance RS-232 communication interface module within the ABB System 800xA® series, designed for industrial automation and control systems. This module works in conjunction with AC 800M controllers, providing a reliable and flexible serial communication solution for users. The CI853 module adopts a standard DIN rail mounting method and integrates two RS-232C communication ports. It supports long-distance communication transmission and can be combined with fiber optic converters or short-distance modems to achieve even longer transmission ranges. The module also supports Hot Swap functionality, allowing replacement or maintenance during system operation, significantly improving system availability and maintenance convenience.
CI853 supports the following communication protocols:
COMLI: An ABB proprietary protocol designed for data transmission between controllers, supporting asynchronous master/slave half-duplex communication and dial-up modem control.
MODBUS RTU: An open serial communication protocol based on master/slave architecture, supporting half-duplex communication, flexible configuration, and strong compatibility.
Siemens 3964R: An industrial communication protocol suitable for Siemens devices.
User-Defined Serial Communication Protocol: Users can customize communication protocols according to requirements, flexibly adapting to various devices.
Supports online insertion and removal, allowing module replacement without system shutdown, ensuring continuous operation.
DIN rail mounting, compact structure, easy installation.
Compatible with HI controllers.
Communication distance can be extended using fiber optic converters or TC562 modems.
Equipped with fault diagnosis indicators for quick troubleshooting.

Mount the CI853 module on a standard DIN rail. Refer to "Mounting AC 800M Units onto DIN-rail" on page 65 and "Installing the PM86x/TP830 Processor Unit in Single Configuration" on page 78 for details.
Connect the communication cable (max. 15 m) to the corresponding interface (COM1 or COM2) on the baseplate.
Connect the cable screen to the grounding terminal to achieve shield grounding via CI583.
For longer distances, use the TC562 short-distance modem:
Mount TC562 on a DIN rail;
Connect a 24 V DC power supply;
Use TK853 cable to connect CI853 to TC562;
Connect from TC562 output terminals to external devices.
CI853 COM1 and COM2 interfaces use RJ45 connectors. Pin definitions are consistent with the COM3 interface of TP830. Refer to "Table 6 on page 85" for details.
The CI853 module is equipped with multi-status LED indicators for real-time monitoring and troubleshooting:

Data transmitted but no response from receiver:
Check if the communication cable is properly connected;
Check if handshake signals are correctly configured.
Data transmission/reception normal but communication content incorrect:
Verify baud rate, parity, data bits, and stop bits settings are consistent;
Check if handshake procedures comply with protocol requirements at both ends;
Verify driver routines are adequate;
Try restarting the controller or resetting the processor unit.
