The DI821 is a high-performance digital input module developed by ABB, designed for the System 800xA® hardware platform. It is suitable for high-voltage digital signal acquisition in industrial automation control systems. This module features 8 independently isolated input channels, supporting 230 V AC or 220 V DC input. It is widely used in power, process industries, heavy machinery, and other applications requiring high-voltage signal monitoring.
The DI821 adopts a modular design and can be used with various Module Termination Units (MTUs), providing flexible system integration solutions. It incorporates advanced functions such as voltage supervision, signal filtering, and status indication, significantly enhancing system reliability and maintainability.
High-Voltage Multi-Channel Input: Provides 8 independent channels, each supporting 230 V AC (164–264 V) or 220 V DC (175–275 V) input, meeting the requirements for connecting various high-voltage signals in industrial field applications.
Individually Isolated Channels: Each input channel utilizes optical isolation technology, effectively preventing field interference signals from entering the control system and ensuring safe and stable operation.
Integrated Voltage Supervision: Channel 1 and Channel 8 can be configured as voltage supervision inputs, monitoring the field power supply status for channels 2–4 and channels 5–7, respectively. If the monitored voltage is lost, the module activates error inputs and illuminates the Warning LED. The error signal can be read via the ModuleBus, facilitating rapid fault localization.
Configurable Digital Filtering: Each channel incorporates a selectable digital filter (2 ms, 4 ms, 8 ms, 16 ms), effectively suppressing noise pulses and ensuring accurate and stable signal acquisition.
Comprehensive Status Indication: The module front panel features Run, Fault, Warning, and individual channel status LEDs, enabling field maintenance personnel to monitor the module and channel status in real-time.
Robust Environmental Suitability: The module complies with multiple international certifications (CE, UL, ABS, BV, DNV, etc.), supports a wide operating temperature range (0 to +55 °C), and offers good immunity to interference and corrosion, making it suitable for harsh industrial environments.
Flexible Installation Compatibility: Compatible with various Extended (TU831, TU839, TU851) and Compact (TU811, TU813) Module Termination Units, meeting different cabinet layout and wiring requirements.
Channels 1 and 8 of the DI821 are designed as dedicated voltage supervision inputs. In applications requiring high reliability, the field power supply for a group of input channels (2–4 or 5–7) can be connected to the corresponding supervision channel (1 or 8). The module internally monitors the voltage at this supervision point continuously. If the voltage is lost, it determines that the external power supply for that group of inputs has failed, activates an internal error signal, illuminates the "Warning" LED, and reports the status via the ModuleBus. This function can be enabled or disabled via software parameters. When disabled, Channels 1 and 8 can be used as normal input channels.
Each input channel includes a fixed 6 ms analog filter to smooth the input signal. Additionally, users can independently configure the digital filter time (2, 4, 8, 16 ms) for each channel based on field interference conditions. The digital filter works as follows: any pulse with a duration shorter than the selected filter time is considered noise and filtered out; only pulses with a width exceeding 1.5 times the filter time (i.e., 3, 6, 12, 24 ms respectively) are recognized as valid signals and transmitted to the controller. This dual-filtering mechanism greatly enhances the module's immunity in environments with strong electromagnetic interference.
Depending on the selected Module Termination Unit (MTU), the DI821 offers different terminal block arrangements:
TU831/TU851 Extended MTU: Provides two independent terminals per channel (e.g., Ch 1.1 and Ch 1.2), facilitating separate connection of signal wires and high-potential references.
TU811/TU813 Compact MTU: Also provides two terminals per channel in a compact layout, suitable for space-constrained cabinets.
TU839 Extended MTU: In addition to providing two terminals per channel, it offers an extra terminal for outgoing sensor supply per channel group, simplifying wiring for sensors requiring external power.
For detailed terminal definitions, please refer to the "Process Connections" table and wiring diagrams in the product manual.
Thanks to its high-voltage input capability and robust reliability design, the DI821 is suitable for various industrial sectors:
Power Industry: Used to monitor status signals (NO/NC contacts) from devices such as circuit breakers, disconnect switches, and protection relays, often directly from high-voltage secondary circuits.
Process Industries (Petrochemical, Chemical, Pharmaceutical): Acquires critical safety and process signals such as the operational status of high-voltage motors, limit switch signals of large valves, and status of emergency stop buttons.
Heavy Machinery & Manufacturing: Monitors the status of high-voltage control circuits for equipment like large presses, machine tools, and conveyor systems.
Infrastructure: Used for status feedback of high-voltage water pumps, fans, lighting circuits in building automation, or status acquisition in rail transit signaling systems.
Marine & Offshore Engineering: With its multiple marine classification society certifications, the DI821 is highly suitable for monitoring the status of ship propulsion systems and cabin equipment.
The DI821 is part of the ABB S800 I/O series and the System 800xA control system. It must be installed in a compatible S800 rack or modular base unit and communicates with the controller via the ModuleBus.
Consider the following when selecting an MTU:
Space: Compact MTUs (TU811/TU813) are suitable for high-density installations.
Wiring Convenience: Extended MTUs (TU831/TU839/TU851) provide more spacious wiring areas and additional functional terminals (e.g., sensor power).
Keying Code: An MTU with the keying code "AC" must be used to ensure physical compatibility and prevent misinsertion.
In ABB's Control Builder or similar engineering tools, the DI821 module can be configured as follows:
Set the digital filter time for each channel.
Enable or disable the voltage supervision function for Channels 1 and 8.
Define the normal/inverted logic for channel signals.
Set fail-safe values (what value the channel should hold or switch to upon communication loss).
After configuration, download the settings to the controller. The module's operating status can then be monitored via the module LEDs and software diagnostic interface.
