The TU811V1 is a Compact Module Termination Unit (MTU) for the S800 I/O series within the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® automation system. As a crucial hardware component in industrial automation control systems, this device is a passive unit primarily used for reliable and safe connection between field instrument signal cables and S800 series I/O modules. It plays a vital role in signal interfacing and distribution within the system and is also an integral part of the ModuleBus communication network at the I/O module level, ensuring accurate transmission of data and control signals.


Featuring a compact design, the product supports up to 8 isolated field signal channels, with a rated voltage of 250V per channel, suitable for connecting various digital input/output signals in industrial environments. Its robust structural design and flexible installation comply with numerous international industrial standards. It is widely used in power generation, process industries, manufacturing, marine, and other sectors, providing a stable and efficient signal connection solution for industrial automation systems.



2. Key Functions and Features

1. High-Density Compact Design

  • Width is only 64 mm (including connector), enabling multi-channel signal connection in limited spaces.

  • Can be mounted horizontally or vertically on standard DIN rails, adapting to different cabinet layouts.

2. Signal Isolation and Safe Connection

  • Provides up to 8 electrically isolated field signal channels, with a maximum rated current of 3A per channel.

  • Utilizes screw terminal connections, supporting solid wires (0.2–4 mm²) and stranded wires (0.2–2.5 mm², 24–12 AWG) for reliable termination.

3. Mechanical Keying Protection Mechanism

  • Equipped with two six-position mechanical keys, allowing 36 different combinations to prevent insertion of incorrect I/O module types.

  • A mechanical locking device securely locks the module in place and sends a "BLOCK" signal to the I/O module, ensuring the module remains in its initialization state until locked.

4. Modularity and Maintainability

  • Top-removable design allows replacement of the termination board even while the system is operational, facilitating maintenance.

  • Connection between the module and MTU supports hot-swapping (under system-permitted conditions), enhancing system maintainability.

5. Integrated ModuleBus Communication

  • Incorporates part of the ModuleBus circuitry, responsible for distributing bus signals to the I/O module and cascading to the next MTU.

  • Automatically generates the correct physical address for each I/O module through a position signal shifting mechanism.

6. Good Environmental Adaptability

  • Wide operating temperature range: 0 to +55°C (horizontal mounting), 0 to +40°C for vertical mounting.

  • Protection rating IP20, suitable for general industrial environments.

  • Certified by multiple international standards, including CE, ABS, BV, DNV-GL, LR, etc., meeting requirements for marine and harsh industrial applications.



3. Installation and Usage Instructions

1. Mounting

  • TU811V1 is designed for mounting on standard DIN rails, featuring a mechanical latch that can be locked and released using a screwdriver.

  • Supports both horizontal and vertical mounting orientations. Note: ambient temperature should not exceed 40°C for vertical mounting.

2. Wiring

  • Each channel provides two terminal connections, totaling 16 termination points.

  • A torque screwdriver is recommended with a torque range of 0.5–0.6 Nm to ensure reliable connections without damaging terminals.

  • Refer to the wiring table in the product manual (e.g., X1 terminal layout) for specific terminal definitions.

3. Mechanical Key Setting

  • The position combination of the two mechanical keys matches the type of I/O module used, preventing misinsertion.

  • Key setting does not affect electrical functionality; it is solely for physical error prevention.

4. ModuleBus Connection

  • The MTU cascades with adjacent MTUs or bus modules via rear connectors, extending the ModuleBus and enabling address assignment.

  • The system automatically recognizes the MTU position and assigns a unique address to each I/O module.

5. Maintenance and Replacement

  • With system power off or under permitted hot-swap conditions, the top cover of the MTU can be removed to replace the termination board or service wiring terminals.

  • During replacement, observe electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions and wiring sequence to avoid signal short circuits or confusion.
