The AI830A is a high-performance Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) analog input module. Its core function is to accurately convert the resistance signals from field RTD sensors into digital temperature values that can be directly read by a control system. 2. Key Technical Features and Advantages

2.1 High Precision and High Resolution Measurement

  • 14-bit Resolution: Provides extremely high signal resolution, capable of detecting minute temperature changes to ensure measurement granularity. For example, for Pt100 sensors, the resolution can reach 0.025°C (50Hz) in the -80°C to 80°C range.

  • Excellent Accuracy: The module incorporates high-precision reference circuitry and advanced algorithms, resulting in very low maximum measurement error. Taking the commonly used Pt100 (IEC 751 standard) as an example, the maximum error is only 0.15°C (50Hz) across the wide range of -200°C to 250°C.

  • Automatic Linearization: The module firmware includes multiple standard RTD curves (e.g., IEC 751, DIN 43760, MIL-T-24388C, etc.), automatically converting resistance values into linear temperature values, reducing the burden on the host system.

2.2 Advanced Noise Immunity and Filtering Capability

  • Powerful Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR) and Normal Mode Rejection Ratio (NMRR): CMRR >120 dB (at 100Ω load), NMRR >60 dB. This means the module significantly suppresses common-mode and normal-mode interference from sources like power lines and motors, ensuring signal integrity in noisy industrial environments.

  • Programmable Mains Frequency Filter: Users can set the filter notch frequency to 50 Hz or 60 Hz via the MainsFreq parameter, effectively eliminating interference from mains frequency and its harmonics. This is a key feature for ensuring measurement stability.

2.3 Comprehensive Diagnostics and Monitoring Functions

  • Real-time Channel Monitoring: Each input channel continuously monitors for open-circuit, short-circuit (except for Cu10), and sensor-to-ground faults. Issues are reported immediately, facilitating rapid troubleshooting and improving system availability.

  • Internal Health Check: The module continuously monitors internal reference voltage and power supply status to ensure optimal operation.

  • Intuitive Front Panel Indicators: Equipped with three LED indicators:

    • RUN (Green): Steady on indicates normal module operation.

    • WARNING (Yellow): Flashing/steady indicates a condition requiring attention, such as a channel warning.

    • FAULT (Red): Flashing/steady indicates a module fault requiring immediate action.

  • Status Reporting: Detailed diagnostic information, including module error, module warning, and specific channel error status (for all 8 channels), is transmitted to the controller via the ModuleBus, enabling predictive maintenance.

2.4 Flexible Configuration and Strong Compatibility

  • Independent Channel Configuration: All 8 channels can be configured individually for different RTD types (e.g., Pt100, Ni120) or resistance input mode, meeting the need to monitor multiple points of different media on a single device.

  • Broad Support for Sensor Standards: The AI830A model additionally supports various industrial standards, such as US Industrial Standard (TCR=0.00391), US Lab Standard (IPTS-68), JIS C 1604-1997 (ITS-90), enhancing its applicability in different regions globally.

  • Compatibility with Various MTUs: Seamlessly integrates with multiple Mechanical Termination Units (MTUs) to meet different wiring needs:

    • TU810/TU814 (Compact MTU): Saves space, suitable for standard density installations.

    • TU812 (Compact MTU with D-Sub 25-pin connector): Suitable for pre-wired applications or scenarios requiring quick connection/disconnection.

    • TU830/TU833 (Extended MTU): Provides fused power connections and a clearer wiring layout, suitable for complex systems with high reliability requirements.

2.5 Robust Design and Isolated Safety

  • Group Isolation: Input channels are isolated from ground in groups, effectively preventing ground loop interference and potential differences from damaging the measurement system, enhancing electrical safety and stability.

  • High Insulation Rating: Rated insulation voltage 50V, dielectric test voltage 500V AC, complying with strict industrial safety standards.

  • No External Power Supply Required: All operating power is supplied entirely via the ModuleBus (+5V, +24V), simplifying system wiring and avoiding noise and fault points introduced by additional power sources.

3. System Integration and Connection

The AI830A module must be installed on a Mechanical Termination Unit (MTU) compatible with the S800 framework, which provides the physical connection to field sensors and actuators.

  1. Integration with MTUs: Users select the appropriate MTU (TU810, TU812, TU814, TU830, TU833) based on wiring preferences and field requirements. The module is mounted onto the MTU via a backplane connector, and field wiring is done through the terminals or connectors on the MTU.

  2. 3-Wire Connection Principle: The module employs a 3-wire measurement method. Using two sense wires (+Input, -Input) and one compensation wire (Return/ZP), it accurately compensates for errors introduced by connecting cable resistance, which is fundamental for achieving high-precision temperature measurement over long distances.

  3. Shielding and Grounding: For optimal EMC performance, shielded field cables must be used. The cable shield should be properly grounded at the MTU end (typically at the EM terminal or connector shell) for effective noise shielding.

  4. Power and Communication: All operating power and data communication with the controller are handled via the ModuleBus interface on the back, eliminating the need for separate power cabling to the module and simplifying system architecture.
