AI880A is a High Integrity Analog Input Module within the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® family, designed for industrial automation and process control systems. The module features 8 current input channels and supports both single and redundant configurations. It is suitable for applications with extremely high safety and reliability requirements, such as chemical, oil & gas, power generation, and pharmaceutical industries. AI880A complies with multiple international safety standards, including IEC 61508 SIL3 and EN 954-1 Category 4, and supports the HART communication protocol, enabling remote monitoring and diagnostics of smart transmitters.


AI880A adopts a modular design and can be used with various Module Termination Units (MTUs) in the S800 I/O system, offering flexible installation and expansion capabilities. Its Loop Supervised Digital Input (DI) function allows it to handle not only analog signals but also monitor the status of digital inputs, significantly enhancing system diagnostic capability and reliability.

  1. Loop Supervised Digital Input (DI)
    AI880A can be configured for digital input monitoring, capable of detecting open circuit, short circuit, logic high, and logic low states. This function requires an external resistor network and is suitable for status monitoring of devices like mechanical contact switches and 2-wire proximity switches.

  2. HART Pass-Through Communication
    The module supports the HART protocol, enabling direct communication with HART-enabled smart transmitters for remote configuration, calibration, and diagnostics without additional wiring.

  3. Advanced Diagnostics & Alarming

    • Monitors internal voltage, field power input/output.

    • Configurable over-range and under-range alarm thresholds.

    • Front-panel LEDs indicate Run, Fault, and Warning statuses.

  4. Flexible Power Supply Design
    The module is powered by 24 V from the ModuleBus and provides independent, current-limited transmitter supply for each channel, supporting 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire transmitters.

4. Installation & Wiring Guidelines

AI880A must be used with designated Module Termination Units (MTUs). Wiring guidelines are as follows:

Recommended Wiring Practices

  1. Shielded Cables: Use shielded cables for all process connections. Overall shield or grouped shielding in multi-core cables is sufficient.

  2. Grounding: Shield should be grounded at the MTU end. Avoid grounding at both ends to prevent ground loops.

  3. Power Supply Isolation: Provide isolated power supplies for transmitters where possible to avoid common-mode interference.
