The 146054-08-05-02-05 is a precision-engineered proximity probe from the Bently Nevada 3300 series, specifically designed for demanding industrial environments where aggressive chemicals, high pressures, and corrosive gases pose significant challenges to conventional monitoring equipment. This model is a 3300 Ceramic Capped Probe featuring a 3/8-24 UNF thread, without armor, and is configured with a 0.8-inch overall case length, a 5.0-meter total cable length, a miniature coaxial ClickLoc connector with standard cable, and multiple agency approvals (CSA, ATEX, IECEx).

The ceramic-capped design incorporates an alumina (Al₂O₃) tip and a 304 stainless steel probe case, offering exceptional resistance to corrosive media such as anhydrous ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and other extreme pH environments. The probe is compatible with the 3300 Proximitor Sensor and extension cables, forming a complete transducer system for non-contact vibration and position measurement in rotating machinery.

This document provides a comprehensive technical introduction to the 146054-08-05-02-05, covering its construction, operating principles, specifications, installation considerations, environmental limits, certifications, and ordering breakdown. All information is derived from the official Bently Nevada datasheet (172932 Rev. J) and supplemented with practical application insights.

2. Product Description and Construction

2.1 General Design Philosophy

The 146054-08-05-02-05 belongs to a family of probes developed specifically for applications where only the front end of the probe case assembly is exposed to corrosive gases and liquids. The ceramic-to-metal interface at the tip is hermetically sealed using helium leak testing, ensuring that no corrosive media can ingress through the front of the probe. However, unlike the 146056 variant, this probe does not include a rear fitting or stainless steel tubing. Consequently, the rear of the probe is not sealed and must not be exposed to destructive environments such as water, NH₃, NH₄OH, or hydrogen sulfide. This design choice simplifies installation in applications where the rear of the probe is routed through clean, dry areas.

2.2 Key Components

  • Ceramic Capped Tip (Alumina, Al₂O₃): Provides superior hardness, chemical inertness, and electrical insulation. The tip is brazed to the metal housing to form a vacuum-tight seal.

  • Probe Case (AISI 304 Stainless Steel): Offers excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. The 304 grade is particularly suited for food, chemical, and marine environments.

  • Coaxial Cable (75 Ω, FEP Insulated): Fluorinated ethylene propylene insulation ensures low dielectric loss, high temperature resistance (-51°C to +177°C), and chemical resistance. The cable is integral to the probe assembly.

  • ClickLoc Connector (Gold-Plated): The connector features a corrosion-resistant, gold-plated brass or beryllium copper interface with a positive locking mechanism that audibly "clicks" when finger-tight. No special tools are required for mating or unmating.

  • Thread Configuration: 3/8-24 UNF 2A mounting threads, allowing direct installation into standard machine casings or custom mounting fixtures.

2.3 Intended Applications

This probe is ideal for:

  • Ammonia compressors in refrigeration plants

  • Chemical reactor agitators

  • High-pressure centrifugal pumps

  • Turbomachinery in petrochemical refineries

  • Offshore platforms where saline and corrosive atmospheres prevail

  • Any rotating equipment requiring reliable proximity measurement in pH-extreme environments

3. Installation and Gapping Considerations

3.1 Mechanical Installation

  • Use the 5/16-inch wrench flats on the probe body to apply torque during installation. Do not torque the probe by its cable or connector.

  • Ensure that the mating threads are clean and free from burrs. Apply anti-seize compound if required by the application, but avoid contaminating the probe tip.

  • Thread engagement must not exceed 0.563 inches (14.3 mm) for the 3/8-24 thread to prevent binding and potential damage to the probe or housing.

  • The probe is designed to be front-mounted; the ceramic tip faces the target shaft or rotor.

3.2 Electrical Gapping

  • Because the linear range of ceramic-capped probes is shifted relative to standard 3300 XL probes, do not rely on mechanical stop methods for gapping.

  • Gap the probe electrically by monitoring the output voltage (typically –4 Vdc to –16 Vdc) and positioning the probe so that the shaft's runout remains within the linear range.

  • Critical Warning: The ceramic tip is robust but cannot withstand direct mechanical loads. Avoid any contact between the tip and the rotating shaft during installation or operation. Contact can cause chipping or fracture of the alumina ceramic, leading to immediate failure.

  • If the monitor has a "lower OK" limit that is not achievable due to the shifted curve, a monitor modification may be required. Consult Bently Nevada application engineering for guidance.

3.3 Cable Routing

  • Maintain a minimum bend radius of 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) for the coaxial cable to prevent signal degradation or internal conductor fracture.

  • Use connector protectors (accessories 03800001 and 40113-02) for installations in wet, dusty, or corrosive environments. Although the 146054-08-05-02-05 does not include a connector protector, it can be retrofitted.

  • For 5.0 m cable lengths, note that the probe is specifically designed for use with the 5 m Proximitor Sensor (i.e., matching lengths are required for system accuracy). Do not mix cable lengths between probe and extension cable.

3.4 Rear-End Environmental Protection

  • Since the 146054-08-05-02-05 does not have a rear seal or stainless steel tubing, the rear end of the probe (including the cable exit) must be routed through a clean, dry, non-corrosive zone.

  • If the installation requires exposure of the rear end to moisture or chemicals, the 146056 variant (with rear tubing and fitting) should be selected instead.

4. System Calibration and Interchangeability

4.1 Target Material Sensitivity

The 3300 system is factory-calibrated to an AISI 4140 steel target. If the actual machine shaft is made of a different material (e.g., stainless steel, Inconel, or titanium), the scale factor and linearity will shift. Bentley Nevada offers custom calibration services for non-standard target materials – specify the material when ordering.

4.2 Interchangeability Error

The ±6.5% interchangeability error includes variations due to probe, extension cable, and Proximitor Sensor replacement. This ensures that any probe within the same product family can be replaced without recalibration, provided the complete system (probe + cable + sensor) remains within the specified tolerance.

4.3 System Accuracy

For absolute accuracy requirements (e.g., for critical machinery protection), it is recommended to perform a full system verification with the actual target material and gap settings after installation. This can be done using a calibrated micrometer and a precision power supply.

5. Hazardous Area Compliance and Safe Use

5.1 Intrinsic Safety (ia)

The 146054-08-05-02-05 with option -05 approvals is certified for intrinsic safety under CSA, ATEX, and IECEx for Class I, Zone 0 and Zone 2 installations. Entity parameters are as follows:

  • Ui = –28 V

  • Ii = 140 mA

  • Pi = 0.91 W

  • Ci = 1.5 nF

  • Li = 610 µH

These parameters apply when the probe is connected via Bently Nevada extension cables to a Bently Nevada Proximitor Sensor with matching entity ratings.

5.2 Conditions of Safe Use (cNRTLus / ATEX / IECEx)

  • ia installations: Must follow Bently Nevada drawing 141092.

  • nA / ec (Zone 2) installations: Must follow Bently Nevada drawing 140979. The Proximitor must be installed so as to provide terminals with a degree of protection of at least IP54.

  • The temperature classification depends on the maximum ambient temperature (see Table 8). Ensure that the probe's surface temperature under fault conditions does not exceed the ignition temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.

5.3 Non-incendive (nA/ec) and Dust (Dc)

For Zone 2 (nA/ec) and dust environments (EPL Dc), the probe maintains the same entity parameter limits. Dust temperature ratings (T90°C to T280°C) are provided for applications where combustible dust may be present.

7. Limitations and Warnings

  • Do not expose the rear of the probe to water, NH₃, NH₄OH, hydrogen sulfide, or any corrosive media. This will compromise the cable insulation and lead to signal degradation or short circuits.

  • Pressure rating of 34 Bar (500 psi) applies only to the front-end ceramic-to-metal seal. The probe body itself is not rated for high-pressure differentials. Higher-pressure applications require custom modifications – consult Bentley Nevada.

  • Mechanical load on the probe tip is strictly prohibited. The ceramic cap is hard but brittle and will fracture under impact or continuous contact.

  • Thread engagement beyond 0.563 inches may cause binding and permanent damage to the probe threads. Use thread gauges to verify housing threads.

  • Cable bends tighter than 25.4 mm (1.0 in) radius will damage the coaxial cable and change its characteristic impedance, causing measurement errors.

  • Calibration accuracy is guaranteed only when using AISI 4140 steel target. For other materials, custom calibration is required.
