330101-00-14-10-02-05 is a Bently Nevada 3300 XL series standard eddy current probe with a total length of 1.0 meter (3.3 feet). This model builds on the base configuration (3/8-24 UNF threads, 0.0‑inch unthreaded length, 1.4‑inch case length, standard ClickLoc connector and standard cable) by adding CSA, ATEX, and IECEx hazardous area approvals, making it suitable for intrinsically safe (IS) installations in explosive atmospheres. Its case length of 1.4 inches (approx. 35.6 mm) is one of the longer options in the 330101 series, specifically designed for hazardous area applications requiring very deep threaded mounting holes or exceptionally thick equipment walls.

With a total length of 1.0 m, this probe is typically used with a 4.0‑meter hazardous area approved extension cable (e.g., 330130-040-00-05) and a 5‑meter hazardous area approved Proximitor Sensor (e.g., 330180-50-05) to form a complete 5‑meter IS system (1.0 m probe + 4.0 m extension cable = 5 m system). This configuration is suitable for installations where the Proximitor Sensor is mounted in a safe area (e.g., a control room or non‑hazardous junction box) and the probe is installed in a hazardous area, with deeper mounting hole requirements.

Key Configuration Note: This model differs from 330101-00-14-10-02-00 only in the approval option (05 instead of 00). Its 1.4‑inch case length is one of the longer options in the 330101 series, suitable for hazardous area equipment requiring very deep thread engagement or exceptionally thick mounting flanges. The 1.0 m total length is intended for 5‑meter IS systems (paired with a 4.0 m hazardous area approved extension cable). The unthreaded length is 0.0 inches, meaning the thread starts immediately after the probe tip.

Conditions of Safe Use (Intrinsically Safe Systems)

When used in an intrinsically safe system, the following conditions must be observed:

  • Barriers/Isolators: Must be installed with intrinsically safe zener barriers per Bently Nevada drawing 141092, or with galvanic isolators.

  • Entity Parameters (when connected to approved Proximitor Sensor):

    • Ui = -28V

    • Ii = 140 mA

    • Pi = 0.91 W

    • Ci = 47 nF

    • Li = 1460 μH

  • Installation Environment: The Proximitor Sensor must be installed in a non‑hazardous area or within an approved explosion‑proof enclosure.

  • System Integrity: The probe, extension cable, Proximitor Sensor, and any connector protectors must all carry the same hazardous area approval rating. Mixing non‑approved components will void the certification.

Important: This probe must be used with hazardous area approved extension cable (e.g., 330130-040-00-05) and Proximitor Sensor (e.g., 330180-50-05) to maintain a complete 5‑meter intrinsically safe system.

Application Scenarios & Selection Guide

330101-00-14-10-02-05 is suitable for the following typical applications:

  1. Standard 5‑Meter IS System Configuration: Paired with a 4.0 m hazardous area approved extension cable (e.g., 330130-040-00-05) and a 5 m hazardous area approved Proximitor Sensor (e.g., 330180-50-05) to form a complete 5‑meter IS monitoring system, ideal for installations where the Proximitor Sensor is mounted in a safe area and the probe is installed in a hazardous area.

  2. Hazardous Area Installations Requiring Very Deep Thread Engagement: The 1.4‑inch case length (approx. 35.6 mm) is longer than the standard 0.8‑inch and 1.2‑inch cases, suitable for extremely deep mounting holes or very thick equipment walls in hazardous areas, such as turbine casings with heavy insulation, large compressor housings, or special mounting adapters.

  3. Radial Vibration Monitoring in Hazardous Areas: For shaft vibration measurement on compressors, steam turbines, generators, and pumps located in Zone 0/1/2 areas such as refineries, petrochemical plants, and natural gas facilities.

  4. Axial Position (Thrust) Monitoring in Hazardous Areas: Can be used to measure rotor axial position and monitor thrust bearing wear, meeting API 670 requirements.

  5. Keyphasor / Speed Measurement in Hazardous Areas: Can serve as a Keyphasor probe to provide speed reference signals.

  6. Suitable for IIC Gas Group: This probe is suitable for the most dangerous environments containing hydrogen, acetylene, carbon disulfide, and other IIC group gases.

Selection Notes:

  • Total Length Matching: Probe length + extension cable length = Proximitor Sensor total system length (5 m or 9 m). This 1.0 m probe must be used with a 4.0 m hazardous area approved extension cable to form a 5‑meter IS system.

  • Case Length Selection: This model has a 1.4‑inch case length, which is one of the longer options. Before installation, carefully measure the effective thread depth of the mounting hole. Important: The datasheet maximum recommended thread engagement is 0.563 inches. The 1.4‑inch case is not meant to be fully threaded into the hole; the extra length accommodates the depth of the mounting hole. The actual engagement should be limited to ≤0.563 inches using the lock nut and washers. Exceeding the recommended engagement may cause installation difficulty or probe damage. If the mounting hole is shallow, select a hazardous area approved model with a 0.8‑inch or 1.2‑inch case length (e.g., 330101-00-08-10-02-05 or 330101-00-12-10-02-05).

  • Unthreaded Length: This model has 0.0‑inch unthreaded length. If your mounting hole has an internal shoulder or you need the probe tip to extend a certain distance, select a hazardous area approved model with a longer unthreaded length (e.g., code "04" = 0.4 inches).

  • Temperature Class Selection: Choose T4 or T5 based on the ambient temperature. T5 (-55°C to +40°C) is for lower ambient temperatures; T4 (-55°C to +80°C) covers a wider range.

  • Ambient Temperature: Standard probe is rated to +177°C. If the application exceeds this temperature, select an ETR high‑temperature hazardous area approved probe (330191/330192 series with approval option 05).

  • Armor Protection: If the cable may be subject to mechanical damage (crushing, abrasion), select an armored hazardous area approved probe (e.g., 330102-00-14-10-02-05, if available).

  • Connector Protection: In hazardous areas, connector protectors (order separately, suitable for hazardous area use) are strongly recommended to prevent oil mist or moisture ingress and maintain intrinsic safety sealing integrity.

Mechanical Dimensions & Installation

  • Probe Tip Diameter: 8.0 mm (0.31 in)

  • Thread Specification: 3/8-24 UNF-2A; recommended lock nut torque: 11.2 N·m (100 in·lbf)

  • Overall Case Length: 1.4 in (35.6 mm)

  • Unthreaded Length: 0.0 in

  • Cable Outer Diameter: 3.68 mm (0.145 in) maximum

  • Connector Outer Diameter: 7.24 mm (0.285 in) maximum

  • Minimum Bend Radius: 25.4 mm (1.0 in)

  • Installation Drawing: Intrinsically safe system installation must strictly follow Bently Nevada drawing 141092, including barrier selection, grounding, and wiring practices.

  • Installation Tips: Before installation, carefully measure the effective thread depth of the mounting hole. Because the case length is 1.4 inches but the recommended thread engagement is only 0.563 inches, do not thread the entire case into the hole. Use the lock nut and washers to limit the effective engagement to ≤0.563 inches while ensuring a secure installation. Use the recommended lock nut (part number 04301007) and tighten to the specified torque. Set the probe gap to the recommended -9 Vdc (approx. 1.27 mm), which can be monitored via the Proximitor Sensor output voltage. In hazardous areas, all operations must comply with relevant explosion protection standards (e.g., IEC 60079-14).
