Conditions of Safe Use (Intrinsically Safe Systems)

When used in an intrinsically safe system, the following conditions must be observed:

  • Barriers/Isolators: Must be installed with intrinsically safe zener barriers per Bently Nevada drawing 141092, or with galvanic isolators.

  • Entity Parameters (when connected to approved Proximitor Sensor):

    • Ui = -28V

    • Ii = 140 mA

    • Pi = 0.91 W

    • Ci = 47 nF

    • Li = 1460 μH

  • Installation Environment: The Proximitor Sensor must be installed in a non‑hazardous area or within an approved explosion‑proof enclosure.

  • System Integrity: The probe, extension cable, Proximitor Sensor, and any connector protectors must all carry the same hazardous area approval rating. Mixing non‑approved components will void the certification.

Important: This probe must be used with hazardous area approved extension cable (e.g., 330130-085-00-05) and Proximitor Sensor (e.g., 330180-90-05) to maintain a complete 9‑meter intrinsically safe system.

  1. Precise Total Length Matching for 9‑Meter IS Systems: This 0.5 m probe must be paired with an 8.5‑meter hazardous area approved extension cable (e.g., 330130-085-00-05) to form a complete 9‑meter IS system (0.5 m + 8.5 m = 9 m).   3. Very Large Rotating Machinery Monitoring in Hazardous Areas: For shaft vibration, axial position, and Keyphasor measurements on very large compressors, steam turbines, generators, and pumps located in Zone 0/1/2 areas such as refineries, petrochemical plants, and natural gas facilities.

  4. Suitable for IIC Gas Group: This probe is suitable for the most dangerous environments containing hydrogen, acetylene, carbon disulfide, and other IIC group gases.

Selection Notes:

  • Total Length Matching: Probe length + extension cable length = Proximitor Sensor total system length (5 m or 9 m). This 0.5 m probe must be used with an 8.5‑meter hazardous area approved extension cable to form a 9‑meter IS system. Do not pair it with a 4.0 m cable (that would create a 4.5 m system, which does not match standard Proximitor lengths).

  • System Accuracy: The 9‑meter IS system has a larger linear deviation (DSL) of < ±0.038 mm compared to ±0.025 mm for 5‑meter systems. For extremely high accuracy requirements, consider using a 5‑meter IS system.

  • Case Length Selection: This model has a 4.0‑inch case length, which is an extreme option. Before installation, carefully measure the effective thread depth of the mounting hole. Important: The datasheet maximum recommended thread engagement is 0.563 inches. The 4.0‑inch case is not meant to be fully threaded into the hole; the extra length accommodates the depth of the mounting hole. The actual engagement must be strictly limited to ≤0.563 inches using the lock nut and washers. Exceeding the recommended engagement may cause installation difficulty, probe damage, or even case bending. If the mounting hole is not deep enough to accommodate the extra length, select a hazardous area approved model with a shorter case (e.g., 0.8, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 2.0, or 3.0 inches).

  • Unthreaded Length: This model has 0.0‑inch unthreaded length. If your mounting hole has an internal shoulder or you need the probe tip to extend a certain distance, select a hazardous area approved model with a longer unthreaded length (e.g., code "04" = 0.4 inches).

  • Temperature Class Selection: Choose T4 or T5 based on the ambient temperature. T5 (-55°C to +40°C) is for lower ambient temperatures; T4 (-55°C to +80°C) covers a wider range.

  • Ambient Temperature: Standard probe is rated to +177°C. If the application exceeds this temperature, select an ETR high‑temperature hazardous area approved probe (330191/330192 series with approval option 05).

  • Armor Protection: If the cable may be subject to mechanical damage (crushing, abrasion), select an armored hazardous area approved probe (e.g., 330102-00-40-05-02-05, if available).

  • Installation Tips: Before installation, carefully measure the effective thread depth of the mounting hole. Because the case length is 4.0 inches but the recommended thread engagement is only 0.563 inches, do not thread the entire case into the hole. Use the lock nut and washers to precisely limit the effective engagement to ≤0.563 inches while ensuring a secure installation. The excess case length will remain outside the mounting hole, but be aware of potential space interference. Use the recommended lock nut (part number 04301007) and tighten to the specified torque. Set the probe gap to the recommended -9 Vdc (approx. 1.27 mm), which can be monitored via the Proximitor Sensor output voltage. In hazardous areas, all operations must comply with relevant explosion protection standards (e.g., IEC 60079-14).
